About SuperKalamSuperKalam is an Edtech Platform for UPSC preparation built to help aspirants learn, practice, revise, and prepare for the exam.

Project Statement

How might we make SuperKalam's Chat more valuable and relevant for UPSC aspirants, so users have a clear reason to use it instead of leaving without engaging?

Discovery & Research

We knew Chat had an engagement problem, so I looked deeper into how users were interacting with it and where they were dropping off.

✨ 84-85% of first-time users left without asking a question.

✨ 34% of regular users returned but still left without asking anything.

✨ Users weren't clear on what they could do with Chat.

✨ Chat didn't have a clear UPSC-specific reason to choose it.

✨ Users had little reason to choose it over ChatGPT or Gemini.

Claude is for code.

ChatGPT is for brainstorming.

SK chat had no identity.

Insight

UPSC students think in books. Laxmikanth, NCERT, Spectrum. So the chat should start from a book.

The Solution

Three entry points, each with suggested prompts: Prep Strategy, Study Topics, and the hero, Chat with Book.

Limits

Suggested prompts are fixed. They cannot change per book. The backend is RAG fed with the book.

1. Start from the home screen

Chat now opens with three clear entry points instead of a wall of prompts. Chat with Book is the hero card, so students see what is special about SuperKalam chat right away. Prep Strategy and Study Topics sit beside it.

2. Tap Prep Strategy or Study Topics

Each entry point opens its own short list of suggested prompts. A student who does not know what to ask gets a starting point in one tap, and can still type anything.

3. Pick a book

Chat with Book opens one bottom sheet that holds every book. Students can filter by type, notes and subject, or search for the exact one they study.

4. The book is pinned

The book stays pinned with its title and exam, and the chat turns from blue to green. It is clear at a glance that answers come from this book.

5. Pick a chapter

Nobody remembers chapter names, so a chapter button sits by the input and opens a list. The chapter applies to one prompt only and unselects after send.

6. Get chapter notes

Ask for notes and the chapter comes back as flashcard-style notes in an image. They are made ahead and checked by the content team, and can be downloaded. If the image fails, a Try Again state keeps the student moving.

What's next

Suggested prompts that change with the selected book. Today the prompts are fixed, so they cannot adapt to the book a student picks. This is not built yet because of technical constraints.
